“Annie, can you run and get some tomatoes? I forgot to take them.”
She ran and vanished behind the many aisles. The lady had only started billing the items.
Annie came back panting and dropped the tomatoes in the basket. I ruffled her short, wavy hair as she took deep breaths.
“That will be five hundred.”, the lady declared. I counted the notes and handed it over.
“You look like your mother.”, the lady said as we lifted the shopping bags from the counter.
“I know.”, said Annie. Her eyes sparkled as she smiled at me. I winked.
Only we knew that God gave her to me through another mother, to whom I was eternally grateful.
